MILSYM Web Map Service

The MILSYM Web Map Service leverages the MILSYM Rendering Framework to provide the means to portray point, line, area and multi-point data using military symbology and provided as a geo-referenced image through an Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Map Server HTTP interface.

This service is useful to:

  • provide situation data, portrayed using military symbology, to disadvantaged GIS-based clients that cannot otherwise receive or process the situation data.
  • loosely couple the symbology rendering with the target application or service.
  • centralize the production of symbology for consistency, maintenance and quality purposes.
  • to reduce development and deployment costs when upgrading an network of systems, applications and services to a new symbology standard version.

The MILSYM Web Map Service consumes layer data from a plug-able layer provider component. This plug-able component provides the ability to tailor the Web Map Service to your specific data source or format.

Symbology standards supported:

  • USA MIL-STD-2525D
  • NATO APP-6D
  • ANSI INCITS 415-2006

Utilizing a Layer Factory concept the service is extensible and can be bound to any information source.

However, out of the box, the MILSYM Web Map Service provides bindings for the following information sources:

  • NATO Vector Graphics (NVG) v2.0.2
  • MILSYM Situation Data XML API

Custom Layer Factory implementations may be produced on request.
